Phoebe Bridgers has said she's a huge Elliott Smith fan—the name Punisher is a reference to an overzealous admirer, and the title track is about her love of the late singer-songwriter. You can hear his influence all over the album: the heartbreaking pathways of "Savior Complex"; the melody that drops down when you expect ascension on "Moon Song." But while Smith's lyrics could be clever, Bridgers' wordplay is unique. "The doctor put her hands over my liver/ She told me my resentment's getting smaller," she sings on "Garden Song." Not that she needs to hide behind jokes: "I've been running around in circles, pretending to be myself/Why would somebody do this on purpose when they could do something else?" she asks on "Chinese Satellite," the quiet instruments of the verses eventually erupting as if to shadow her feelings. There are other shadows at play, too: a male harmony haunting her light-as-air vocals on "Garden Song" and the otherwise ethereal "Halloween," and the specter of her father—she's spoken of his substance-abuse issues—darkening the lyrics of "Kyoto" even as Mellotron and amiable '90s drums provide aural sunshine. © Shelly Ridenour/Qobuz

Warp, 30 Years of Groundbreaking Music

Warp, the record label which led to the blossoming of some of the most boundary-pushing artists of the electronic music scene, such as Aphex Twin, LFO, Boards of Canada, Autechre, and Squarepusher, now has their catalogue available on Qobuz. It’s the perfect opportunity to revisit the history of Britain’s best-respected independent label.

10 Queens of Folk

An acoustic guitar. Sometimes not much else. But always a unique voice… In recent years, the folk revival has produced some new major and exceptional female singers, just like their elders in the sixties, and particularly the seventies. Some of these Queens of folk have earnt their place in the Hall of Fame, while others remain equally essential hidden gems. This (subjective) selection features ten of the best.

Trip Hop in 10 Albums

At the dawn of the 90s the trip hop wave flooded Great Britain with electro influenced by Jamaican music and rap beats. With dreamy rhythms and oppressive atmospheres, Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky, Morcheeba and various others invented a futuristic kind of dark soul music which was sometimes very cinematographic. Time to zoom in on 10 albums from a genre with a fuzzy outline but a very clear influence.
