Mid-16th century: Catholic Church music is threatened by a pandemic. All too worldly, artificial things had crept into sacred chanting to such an extent that the famous Council of Trent even wanted to reduce singing in the mass to the monophonic Gregorian chant again. As the Fama tells us, Palestrina saved polyphonic church music from this crisis with his Missa Papae Marcelli.
In a live recording, beauty farm sings this legendary work, which raises complex questions of interpretation and juxtaposes the mass with well- known hymns in the chorale. frabernardo dedicates the album to Bruno Turner, who once set standards in early music with the ensemble Pro Cantione Antiqua, for his 90th birthday. © fra bernardo

Undervalued: a Look Back on Female Composers

From Sappho of Mytilene to Kaija Saariaho and Clara Schumann, several women have managed to break through the macho codes of the milieu and become composers. While the classical music landscape has been largely dominated by men in recent centuries, the work of their female colleagues, whether pioneers or contemporaries, is just as fascinating. Here we put eleven undervalued figures of female composition in the spotlight.

Fabio Biondi & Europa Galante, 30 years of freedom

The Italian violinist and conductor Fabio Biondi, notably famous for his rendition of the Four Seasons by Vivaldi with his ensemble Europa Galante, is one of the musicians who actively spurns the idea of separating and compartmentalising music. We take a look back at the career of one of the most versatile and open-minded classical musicians of our time, and an essential figure of baroque violin.

The Stylish Henry Mancini

Sophistication, humour, sensitivity… These are the words that often come to mind when describing Henry Mancini’s music. 23 years after his death, he is still seen as a major and influential pop composer. No doubt because, in addition to his glossy and light works for which he is renowned (notably Breakfast at Tiffany’s and The Pink Panther), he also knew how to display the complexity of his musical language in more tormented compositions.
