The ninth full-length outing from the veteran punk outfit, Nowhere Generation is both apoplectic and refined. The band's social-political fervor remains front and center -- themes of social inequality, climate change, and income disparity loom large -- but after two decades spent raging against the machine, Rise Against no longer need the sonic exclamation points to back those positions up. To be fair, the 11-track set is far from tame, as evidenced by the fiery opener "The Numbers," "Broken Dreams, Inc.," and the anthemic title cut, all of which hit hard. Cut from the same tattered, inclusive cloth as Bad Religion and Against Me!, Rise Against have never favored aggression over melody, and Nowhere Generation is generously stocked with hooks, as well as deep currents of nostalgia. Regret casts a long shadow on the sparse, chamber-punk ballad "Forfeit," which echoes the orchestral re-imaginings of 2018's Ghost Note Symphonies, but it's a relative outlier, as the remainder of Nowhere Generation focuses on the marriage of melody and might. Over the years, Rise Against have remained true to both their old-school melodic punk style and their human/animal rights beliefs, and while they may be getting longer in the tooth, their incisors are still sharp enough to draw blood. Nowhere Generation may lack the nervy zeal of peak efforts like Siren Song of the Counter Culture and Appeal to Reason, but it most certainly has the gravitas.

Know Your Lemmy

Lemmy Kilmister passed away on the 28th of December 2015, after 40 years fronting Motörhead, the loudest rock’n’roll band in history. The icon, who was deemed to be immortal, died of cancer at the age of 70, inevitably taking Motörhead to the grave with him. The English rock band went through two decades of ups, downs, and misunderstandings—not that this ever transferred into the powerful sound they let loose on stage...

Tuareg Blues: The Rock Oasis

Since the Tuareg group Tinariwen released their first official album in 2002, entitled “The Radio Tisdas Sessions”, their electric, guitar-soaked music has become its own category of rock - one that is recognised and respected from Bamako to Los Angeles. This international success has allowed many musicians from the Sahara to get their music heard, as Western rockers continue to be drawn towards this poetic music emanating from the sand dunes and rocky expanses.

Pavement's Not-So-Secret Genre-Making History

Thirty years ago, Pavement set a road map for '90s indie rock—lo-fi, whip-smart, Gen-X cynical—with their career-defining Slanted and Enchanted. (And yes, the band came to define the term "slacker rock.") You can still hear their influence on artists like Courtney Barnett, Deerhunter, Beabadoobee, Parquet Courts, Kiwi Jr., and many more. And, of course, they famously, majorly inspired Blur's 1997 self-titled album, in effect changing the face of Brit-pop without even meaning to. As Pavement continues on their first tour since 2010, here's a look back at the band's history through their epochal records.
