2011's Ceremonials, which found Florence + the Machine expanding on their already expansive sound, helped to further propel the ghostly Brit into the spotlight, and on MTV Unplugged, she's come full circle, allowing fans a peek into the bombast while providing the aging, acoustic show with a little defibrillation. It's all well and good, with a solid set list that includes favorites from both records along with a pair of oddball covers, but Florence Welch's stadium-sized persona fights for air within the gothic confines of New York City's historic Angel Orensanz synagogue. You can really feel her holding back on reliable show stoppers like "Dog Days are Over," "Cosmic Love," and "Shake It Out," which is kind of the point for an unplugged session, but Welch's greatest strength is her ability to go from heartbreak to goose bumps without a bead of perspiration, and this well-played, technically sound set suffers a bit for its absence. That said, midtempo tracks like "Only If for a Night," "No Light, No Light," and "What the Water Gave Me," the latter of which finds Welch in full control of the room by the song's second half, are soulful, spooky, and bold, allowing room for both Welch and her machine to strut their stuff without sounding like a murder of caged crows.

Trip Hop in 10 Albums

At the dawn of the 90s the trip hop wave flooded Great Britain with electro influenced by Jamaican music and rap beats. With dreamy rhythms and oppressive atmospheres, Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky, Morcheeba and various others invented a futuristic kind of dark soul music which was sometimes very cinematographic. Time to zoom in on 10 albums from a genre with a fuzzy outline but a very clear influence.

Kraftwerk, 50 Years Ahead of Their Time

Kraftwerk, the most influential electro group in history, founded by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider, who died of cancer on May 6, 2020, have always been ahead of their time. Ahead of technology, composition and stage performance, the Germans proved to the public that robots were also capable of emotion and paved the way for techno, new wave and even hip-hop.

Lhasa, An Unforgettable Shooting Star

With only three studio albums, one live album and three international tours, Lhasa de Sela left a unique mark in the history of modern popular music. “La Llorona”, “The Living Road” and “Lhasa” are distinct and accomplished works, revealing a strange yet familiar world, halfway between dreams and reality. Her light/dark songs carry the genuine emotions of an artist whose sensitive singing offers a pact of intimate complicity with the listener. Lhasa de Sela’s life contains all the ingredients for a legend, all the steps of a novel, all the emotions of a beautiful and overwhelming story.
