Respective winners in 2010 and 2011 of the Malian TV talent show Tounkagoura, Djénéba & Fousco have since united their efforts and feelings. Both coming from the city of Kayes and descending of big griot families, Djénéba Kouyaté and Fousco Sissoko represent the continuity of traditions, but also their renewal. The harmonious symbiosis, born from their musical couple, radiates and convinces. Congolese star Fally Ipupa claims to be a fan, choreographer Jean-Claude Galotta puts them together on stage alongside Rokia Traoré and kora player Ballaké Sissoko invites them during a carte blanche.

Their first album Kayeba Khasso gathers renewed classics from the Mandingo tradition (Miniamba, Djeliyaba or Yriyoro) and bright original compositions from Fousco, such as Regrets, a single in which Ballaké plays opposite them; the nostalgic Kayeba Khasso, which evokes their city of birth; or the bluesy Fousco & Djénéba, which celebrates their love. The mischievous arrangements balance the Mandingo singularities of the percussion, the blues rock spirit of the guitar and the harmonic smoothness of the violoncello. The songs remain stuck in your head and the voices carry you away. It’s a nice beginning to a promising career. © Benjamin MiNiMUM/Qobuz
