All of the singles Pulp recorded for Gift Records, including both the A- and B-sides, are collected on Pulpintro -- The Gift Recordings. From the opening track, "Space," it's clear that Pulp's confidence and talents have grown considerably, even from the relatively accomplished Separations. Now, the band has created a signature sound that relies heavily on cheap, synthesized sounds as well as tight pop melodies and a theatrical attack that approximates the art rock of Roxy Music and David Bowie. However, Pulp is too concerned with earthly pleasures to really recall Roxy or Bowie. Furthermore, the band's knack for creating terrific pop singles prevents them from being too pretentious, as the singles "O.U.," "Razzamatazz," and, particularly, "Babies" illustrate. And even though it's just a collection of singles, Pulpintro holds together as well as Separations, if not better.

Britpop in 10 Albums

“If punk was about getting rid of hippies, then I'm getting rid of grunge.” It was with this sentence from Damon Albarn in 1993 that England invaded the stage previously dominated by Nirvana and Seattle grunge. Britpop is deeply linked to politics and local identity and emerged just as Tony Blair and New Labour were entering the scene. English romanticism was once again becoming attractive compared to the American identity, which was considered too hollow in the UK. Make way for “Cool Britannia”.

Metallica, the Path to Glory

Having sold 125 million albums across the globe, including some 30 million copies of their “Black Album”, Metallica is among the unlikeliest of pop sensations to come out of the last half-century. So how did a heavy metal band with such a convoluted song structure end up on par with music from the likes of Madonna and Michael Jackson? By following their instincts and sheer determination. Let’s return to the roots of the most famous heavy metal band in history.

What's Going On, Marvin ?

In the beginning, there was "What's Going On", one of the greatest soul records ever, released 50 years ago. This is the story of how Marvin Gaye changed the history of the Motown label and of popular music in the 1970s.
