While living in London in the years 1926–28 Yehuda Leib HaLevi Ashlag, known as Baal HaSulam, a prominent Kabbalist, composed his cycle Melodies of the Upper Worlds which are heard in this recording in piano arrangements by Mikael Ayrapetyan. Many of the melodies are composed to text fragments from Kabbalistic sources and enshrine an aspiration to sense the spiritual world in a direct appeal to the heart.
“The Melodies of the Upper Worlds are a special cycle that describes the sensual and emotional experiences of the spiritual attainments of the great Kabbalist teacher – Baal HaSulam. I believe that in the 21st century, humanity is experiencing a need for spiritual search to understand the meaning of life, and when I came across the manuscripts of the melodies of Baal HaSulam, I felt that it was my duty to reveal these magnificent melodies to a very wide range of listeners around the world. It was very difficult to keep them in their original form, but I was guided by the desire to make this world a better place and I struggled to achieve the goal. These melodies are amazing, sincere and deep. I am very grateful to Grand Piano for this opportunity! Art should not be kept in oblivion!” (Mikael Ayrapetyan)

The Paradox of Esa-Pekka Salonen’s Studio

Esa-Pekka Salonen is an acclaimed finnish conductor and prolific composer. With over 60 albums under his belt, he has heavily contributed to the history of musical interpretation. This is an interview with an exceptional musician, who discusses his unique approach to working on classical music in the studio.

Fabio Biondi & Europa Galante, 30 years of freedom

The Italian violinist and conductor Fabio Biondi, notably famous for his rendition of the Four Seasons by Vivaldi with his ensemble Europa Galante, is one of the musicians who actively spurns the idea of separating and compartmentalising music. We take a look back at the career of one of the most versatile and open-minded classical musicians of our time, and an essential figure of baroque violin.

The Stylish Henry Mancini

Sophistication, humour, sensitivity… These are the words that often come to mind when describing Henry Mancini’s music. 23 years after his death, he is still seen as a major and influential pop composer. No doubt because, in addition to his glossy and light works for which he is renowned (notably Breakfast at Tiffany’s and The Pink Panther), he also knew how to display the complexity of his musical language in more tormented compositions.
