After the release of Encore 1 in June 2018, Nils Frahm expanded the All Melody universe even further with Encores 2 just six months later. The artist explains, “The idea behind Encores is one we had from before All Melody; to do separate releases each with their own distinct musical style and theme, perhaps even as a triple album, but All Melody became larger than itself and took over any initial concepts. I think the idea of Encores is like musical islands that compliment All Melody”. Whereas the former was made minimalistically with just a piano and a harmonium, the German composed these five tracks in a more ambient way using a recording technique through an amplified stone well he found in Majorca!
Once again, the acoustics are impressive on this album, especially on the intro Talisman with its long drawn-out melodies. Nils Frahm also brings us another round of electronic layers during the 12 minutes of his final track, Spells, which fluctuates between ambient and atmospheric techno with hushed voices and an early 90’s synth. 26 minutes of music to heal the mind. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz

Playlists
Ólafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm, Max Richter, Poppy Ackroyd, Peter Broderick, Joana Gama... In recent years, these popular names have all been grouped under the vast and imprecise label "neoclassical". In truth, this "scene" looks more like a motley crew of curious artists who mix classical instruments with electronic production. Drawing influence from American minimalism, these musicians tantalise the senses and expand horizons on both sides of the musical spectrum.
Hailed by critics of classical music as well as amateurs of electronic experiences, Nils Frahm’s talent has managed to get everyone to agree for the last ten years. Whether he plays on a church organ or a synthesiser fitted with effect pedals, the German pianist is always looking forward, and that’s what makes him so appealing.
