Jazzmen Kamasi Washington and Robert Glasper, multi-instrumentalist and producer Terrace Martin and rap beatmaker Patrick Douthit a.k.a. 9th Wonder have joined forces for a supergroup called Dinner Party. This rather short self-titled debut album was recorded at the Chalice Studios in Los Angeles at the end of 2019. With Phoelix’s voice on four tracks, these big names (who have basically known each other since high school) have cooked up some soft, very chilled contemporary soul. There are also unpretentious hints of 90s nu soul, relying more on atmosphere than technical flamboyance. Over soft rhythms, cinematic keyboards, sensual brass and sparkling guitars, Phoelix’s velvety vocals spice up the songs with politically-charged lyrics. On Freeze Tag, for example, he directly confronts police brutality: “They told me to put my hands up behind my head… I think they got the wrong one, I’m sick and tired of runnin’.” Upon listening, this alloy of jazz, soul and solid hip-hop beats doesn’t feel entirely new, though its perfectly calibrated execution allows you to spend about twenty minutes in a musical bubble bath. A brilliant, groovy record wrapped in an album cover designed by Amani Washington, Kamasi’s sister. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

Kamasi Washington, the Sax of Angels

After his major success with a triple album, he went on to repeat this with a double one! Kamasi Washington charms and intrigues well beyond the jazz sphere. Working with Kendrick Lamar and Snoop Dogg, and most importantly as the head of the West Coast Get Down collective, the charismatic saxophonist from Los Angeles brings an incredible wave of excitement to the contemporary jazz scene.

Philadelphia Soul, Funk with a Bow Tie

Neither Motown nor Stax Records! Philadelphia Soul offered a third voice of its own. Created by the Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff duo, this genre - the precursor of disco - made America dance in the early 70s by soaking it in silk and champagne.

Kendrick Lamar, an autopsy of a phenom

He is revered both by the mainstream and the underground. And rarely a rapper has gathered such unanimous support. But how did Kendrick Lamar manage to roll over the competition to such an extent? And his dominance could last for quite some time…
