As the expression goes, all things come in threes ! After Intoxicated Man in 1995 and Pink Elephants in 1997, Mick Harvey has put his name to a third volume of Serge Gainsbourg covers in English. And, as was true for his previous records, the ex-bandmate of Nick Cave (Harvey was in the Bad Seeds until 2009) has once again created a uniquely refined collection. In this release, he manages to create a sound that is all his own, albeit based on Gainsbourg's DNA, just genetically modified. "“Many of the songs I have recorded are ones I had hoped to translate the first time I approached this material but I just thought they would be ones that were too hard to translate. But once I sunk my teeth into the task I found they were no more problematic than most of the songs from the first two albums.” says Harvey. "The whole project has just been enormous fun, to be honest." Another strength for Mick Harvey here is his song selection. Some obvious Gainsbourg hits of course (Couleur Café), but mostly lots of lesser known tracks. (J'envisage, Ce mortel ennui, and La Chanson du forçat). For his cover of La Décadanse, he duets with his wife Katy Beale. © MZ/Qobuz
