About

Who could be blamed for jumping on the Stranger Things bandwagon? The soundtrack for the nostalgic Netflix series has seen many producers diving back into all things Eighties. Danielle "Danz" Johnson, alias Computer Magic, has been on this vibe from the off, as attested by the contagious disco-pop of Grand Junction, his 2011 hit. On this second album, this fan of sci-fi in general and Philip K Dick in particular uses and abuses references, as if Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, New Order and Giorgio Moroder had all been thrown into a washing machine. The result is indeed pretty clean: Amnesia, an archetypal piece of 80s synth-pop with healthy production values, or the cosmic-disco ballad Nesbraskaland. Ordinary Life (Message from an A.I. Girlfriend) is probably the most revealing title on this record, with a taste of super-sour sweets, but also a dark undertow that suggests a skeleton in the closet (presumably it's Ian Curtis's). Perfect Game offers yet another demonstration of the songwriter's skills and the New Yorker's gift for catchy melodies, of which there is an embarrassment of choice for the single. Still a little underground back home, this hit machine has found an outlet in Japan, where it has become the muse for Milk Fed, Sofia Coppola's fashion line. Over there, Computer Magic regularly composes for TV ads and brings out a new album for Japanese fans every single year. We need some of that over here, and fast. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
