Shoegaze, the calm & the storm

The two faces of shoegaze, the rock current that lit up England in the early 90s, couldn’t be more fundamentally opposed: a fierce battle between violent guitars and silky vocals. From its precursors like the Cocteau Twins and Jesus & Mary Chain, to its godfathers My Bloody Valentine, Ride and Slowdive, shoegaze is always on the move and many of their heirs still strum their guitars and create electric sounds.

“If punk was about getting rid of hippies, then I'm getting rid of grunge.” It was with this sentence from Damon Albarn in 1993 that England invaded the stage previously dominated by Nirvana and Seattle grunge. Shooting Big Star

It took a short legacy of only two years and three albums for Big Star to enter the rock 'n' roll pantheon. Unsuccessful in the beginning of the 70’s, Alex Chilton and Chris Bell’s band is now acclaimed as one of the most influential of its kind.
