This new Vivaldi album marks a double anniversary, the thirty-year anniversary of the close collaboration between Cecilia Bartoli and the famous English label Decca, and the twenty-year anniversary of the very successful first Vivaldian opus. This time leaving behind Giovanni Antonini and his Il Giardino Armonico ensemble, Cecilia Bartoli has selected French musicians well versed in Vivaldi’s music, as if to demonstrate the universal nature of the Red Priest’s compositions. In fact, Jean-Christophe Spinosi and his Ensemble Matheus have distinguished themselves with Vivaldi’s instrumental music since their early days.

They started off their collaboration with five concerts, dedicated of course to the Venetian composer, in Munich, Prague, Baden-Baden and Versailles. For their first recording together they selected ten opera titles, nine of which weren’t featured on the 1999 album. The plethora of Vivaldi operas provides an endless supply to recitalists who can easily put together, as is the case here, an extremely lively programme featuring the most beautiful gems of an extraordinarily expansive composer whose melodic liveliness has been a constantly fascinating topic. This release is also beautiful in itslef (accessible on your Qobuz account), as it features a photo book containing beautiful portraits of Cecila Bartoli taken by Roman photographer Viviane Purdom, who has devoted her life to masterfully shooting great classical musicians. Happy anniversary indeed! © François Hudry/Qobuz

The Teatro Massimo, Palermo's treasure

Qobuz recently travelled to Palermo to meet the Diva Angela Gheorghiu, who was there to sing Adrienne Lecouvreur in the Teatro Massimo. But let's give the theatre its full name: the Teatro Massimo Vittorio Emanuele! Spiritually and geographically, it is at the heart of the Sicilian capital. A contemporary of the Garnier opera house, it is a grandiose monument built in the neoclassical style which flourished in many parts of the world at the end of the 19th Century. It is the biggest opera house in Italy and the third-largest opera house in Europe after Paris (Palais Garnier) and Vienna. We met Francesco Giambrone, sovrintendante del Teatro Massimo…

Jonas Kaufmann in 10 Key Albums

With his flattering physique reminiscent of a handsome romantic, German Jonas Kaufmann has successfully modernised the image of opera tenors, long considered as unrepentant tumblers… Beyond his powerful and versatile voice, Jonas Kaufmann possesses an immense repertoire in several languages, masters all styles of opera, from Wagner to Verdi or Puccini, and sings the lied or the French opera to perfection. A great admirer of Fritz Wunderlich, he started his career “the old fashioned way”, in a company touring around small German theatres before taking off on his own towards a prodigious career. After a chaotic year in 2017 due to a ruptured blood vessel on his vocal chords, Jonas Kaufmann seems to have fully recovered and is working on countless new projects. Qobuz looks back on his career, highlighting 10 albums.

The rivals: Handel and Porpora in London

After the recent release of the wonderful opera Germanico in Germania by Nicola Porpora, counter-tenor Max-Emanuel Cencic is giving an album recital by way of homage to Nicola Porpora recorded with the Armonia Atenea ensemble under the direction of George Petrou. In this new and atmospheric piece, he evokes the ferocious rivalry which set Porpora against Handel in London...
