Léa Desandre has all the makings of a great star. Noticed when she was only twenty years old by William Christie, crowned "Revelation Lyric Artist" at the 2017 Victoires de la Musique, she has already performed on the world's greatest opera stages, from Aix-en-Provence to Salzburg, including the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and the Sydney Opera House. The singer, who excels in opera productions as well as in recitals, and who is an appreciated guest artist on the recordings of Emmanuelle Haïm and Thibault Cauvin, needed only this recording published by Erato to complete the start of a brilliant career.

For her first album published under her own name, Léa Desandre has made a strong start in choosing the theme of the Amazons. This mythical group of warrior women living apart from men has inspired a whole legion of composers—we are treated here to a focus on the Italian and French baroque periods—who take the listener through a forest of diverse emotions: mockery, lamentations, anger... the Amazons inspiring love as much as hate. Worse than these being the indifference.

However, it is impossible to be indifferent to this very high quality album. Léa Desandre is in her element here: her surprisingly malleable timbre carries everything along and reveals the extreme sensitivity of the performer. Accompanied by her usual performing partner, the lutenist Thomas Dunford who is here conducting the Ensemble Jupiter at the top of its game, she does not hesitate to bring in the soprano Véronique Gens, the mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli or her mentor William Christie for a single track. That is all there is to it. But much more than talent, what unites all these good people and gives infinite pleasure to the listener is the joy of playing as in a family. “Amazone is a story from the heart. To the rhythm of the encounters, it is my metronome, my compass", the mezzo-soprano freely declares in the first page of the accompanying booklet. You can be certain of this, Léa, your metronome beats perfect time. © Pierre Lamy/Qobuz
