Celle qui naquit il y a cent ans ne révolutionna pas le jazz vocal mais l’incarna. Avec sa tessiture délirante, son sens renversant de l’improvisation et cette façon bien à elle d’attraper la liberté par le col et de la faire swinguer comme jamais, Ella Fitzgerald traversa le XXe siècle sans se soucier des modes ou de l’évolution de ce jazz qui lui doit tant. Celle qui fut chanteuse d’orchestre avent de devenir en solitaire une reine du be-bop affrontait, voix au poing, tous les instrumentistes. Car comme elle aimait à le répéter, « j’essaie de faire avec ma voix ce que j’entends faire dans l’orchestre avec les cuivres. » Ella Fitzgerald s’appropriait tout ce qu’elle touchait. Du Great American Songbook dont les pages furent noircies par des génies nommés Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, George & Ira Gershwin, Rodgers & Hart, Harold Arlen, Johnny Mercer ou bien encore Jerome Kern, aux standards de la bossa ou de la soul, aucun répertoire ne résistait à son phrasé, à son scat ou au simple velours de ses caresses vocales ou de ses griffures aiguës. Les partenaires privilégiés d’Ella furent peu nombreux mais comptèrent parmi les grands instrumentistes de la jazzosphère : Bill Kenny et les Ink Spots, le trompettiste Louis Armstrong, le guitariste Joe Pass et les pianistes et chefs d’orchestre Count Basie et Duke Ellington. Une liste à laquelle on peut ajouter les trompettistes Roy Eldridge et Dizzy Gillespie, le guitariste Herb Ellis et les pianistes Tommy Flanagan, Oscar Peterson, Lou Levy, Paul Smith, Jimmy Rowles et Ellis Larkins...
