Dernièrement, Tim McGraw et Faith Hill ont repris le flambeau, avec Trisha Yearwood et Garth Brooks. Il est également fascinant d'écouter avec un peu de recul des duos qui ont brillé et se sont enflammés, comme Rodney Crowell et Rosanne Cash ou, plus récemment, Kacey Musgraves et Ruston Kelly, qui chantent en harmonie sur "To June This Morning" de Cash. Et écouter Lorrie Morgan, qui a tragiquement perdu son mari Keith Whitley mort à 34 ans, chanter avec lui sur "Til a Tear Becomes a Rose" est un déchirement profond.

Nashville au féminin

Pas facile de jouer des coudes sur la scène de la machiste Music City, berceau de la country music, lorsqu’on est une femme. Au fil des ans, certaines ont tout de même réussi à faire bouger les lignes et les mentalités. Comme ces dix-là, pionnières et révolutionnaires ayant posé – et imposé – leurs santiags sur la table de Nashville.

Taylor Swift
Jamais superflu de rappeler qu’avant d’être une star planétaire de la pop moderne s’offrant des featurings avec Kendrick Lamar, Ed Sheeran et Future, Taylor Swift fut d’abord une étoile country. Contrairement à ses aînées Loretta, Dolly ou Tammy, elle n’a pas grandi maltraitée, entre 15 frères et sœurs, dans une cabane en rondins d’une forêt de Pennsylvanie mais aux côtés d’un père dans la finance et d’une mère dans le marketing, fans de James Taylor (d’où son prénom). D’abord accro aux comédies musicales, elle prend des cours de chant et veut marcher sur les traces de ses idoles Shania Twain et Faith Hill. Direction Nashville avec ses parents décidés à la soutenir dans son rêve. Vite repérée, vite épaulée, elle prend surtout soin d’écrire. Son premier album éponyme sort en octobre 2006 et tout est déjà là. À 16 ans, Taylor Swift signe ou cosigne toutes ses chansons, fait de belles étincelles avec une country pop pur jus qui restera 157 semaines dans le Top 100 du Billboard ! Un brin girly mais pas trop, elle manie déjà avec beaucoup de doigté la chanson « confession » et offre une véritable maturité. Deux ans plus tard, avec Fearless, elle fait sauter la banque, rafle toutes les statuettes possible (ce qui énerve Kanye West qui déboule sur la scène des MTV Video Music Awards dans un mythique coup de gueule) et devient la nouvelle reine de cette country pop qui affole les tiroirs-caisses et crée le débat dans la communauté country et ses puristes… Très vite, la musique de Taylor Swift s’éloigne des canons d’une Nashville à l’ancienne et ce ne sont pas quelques lignes de banjo çà et là ni une paire de santiags sur scène qui en font une pure country girl. Avec des albums comme Red (2012), 1989 (2014), Reputation (2017) et Lover (2019), sa scène s’appelle le monde et non plus Nashville. Taylor n’a pourtant jamais cessé de tremper sa plume dans le même encrier que ses cow-girls aînées, maîtrisant à la perfection romances, peines de cœur, introspections, commentaires sociopolitiques ou expériences personnelles, comme lorsqu’elle évoquait le cancer de sa mère sur Soon You'll Get Better… En 2020, elle change de braquet en sortant deux albums confinés, Folklore et Evermore, produits par Aaron Dessner, le guitariste de The National, qu’elle considère comme une de ses idoles. Elle booste alors sa crédibilité auprès d’un public plus indie, enfonçant le clou en invitant Justin Vernon de Bon Iver mais également les sœurs Haim et Marcus Mumford de Mumford & Sons. La nouvelle facette d’une musicienne loin d’avoir fait le tour de son potentiel créatif…

Margo Price
Originaire d’Aledo, un trou de l’Illinois, Margo Price a eu la chance d’avoir été repérée par un certain Jack White qui l’a signée sur son label, Third Man Records. Avoir les faveurs de l’ancien leader des White Stripes lui apportera quelques sunlights supplémentaires qu’elle mérite bien… Midwest Farmer's Daughter, son premier album solo paru en 2016, n’était pourtant pas un premier essai pour cette chanteuse alors âgée de 32 ans. Arrivée à Nashville après le lycée en 2003, elle rencontre son futur mari, la bassiste Jeremy Ivey, avec qui elle forme l’obscur groupe Buffalo Clover. Trois albums autoproduits plus tard et un tsunami de malheurs en pleine poire (la mort de son fils, un séjour en prison et des soucis de bouteille et de dépression, what else), Margo Price avançait enfin seule avec ce disque conçu dans la Mecque du rock, les mythiques studios Sun de Memphis. Un bel album logiquement nourri de la mouise qu'elle a vécue. Dans les oreilles, Midwest Farmer's Daughter – évident clin d’œil au Coal Miner’s Daughter de Loretta Lynn – marche sur les brisées des grandes dames de la country éternelle. Loretta donc mais aussi Dolly Parton voire Tanya Tucker. Musicalement, l’approche est assez puriste et fleure bon la country des glorieuses 70's, quand Waylon et Willie chahutaient Music City. Un peu de honkytonk, de rockabilly, de twang et de blues et la reine Margo entonne ses chansons avec conviction et sincérité. Par la suite, notamment sur son album de 2020 That's How Rumors Get Started, elle s’orientera davantage vers le classic rock, déballant des guitares zeppeliniennes, des chœurs gospel et des sons souvent rock, parfois soul, toujours très 70's à la Fleetwood Mac.
