Miles Davis en 10 albums

Trente ans après sa mort, Miles Davis reste l’un des musiciens les plus importants de son temps. L’impressionnante discographie du trompettiste américain reflète à la perfection ses perpétuelles remises en question et son influence au-delà de la sphère jazz. La preuve en dix albums choisis subjectivement dans un océan de révolutions esthétiques.

Bitches Brew (Columbia – 1970)
Le travail rythmique de In a Silent Way avait plus que posé les bases d’une nouvelle ère. Mais tout bascule vraiment l’été de cette même année 1969, lorsque Miles Davis s’enferme avec 12 musiciens pour enregistrer ce qui deviendra l’emblématique double album Bitches Brew, qui paraît en avril 1970. Le carambolage entre jazz, rhythm’n’blues, funk et rock’n’roll est violent. Ce que le public entend ne ressemble à rien. Ou plutôt à un tour de magie de plus de 90 minutes au cours duquel le trompettiste prouve qu’il a digéré Hendrix, le funk, le rock, le blues et une bonne partie de l’histoire du jazz. Malgré cette ouverture d’esprit, il ne détournera jamais la majorité du jeune public, pas assez mûre pour la complexité de son discours électrique. De leur côté, les puristes estiment que Miles vend son âme au diable, certains l’accusant de sombrer dans le commercial. Pures divagations, tant cette musique extrême et extrémiste est éloignée des standards de diffusion des radios américaines, et maltraite les tympans curieux. Une fois de plus, Miles et ses complices passent des heures en studio à improviser autour de motifs et de suites d’accords simples, sans aucun arrangement préalable. « C’était comme un orchestre », expliquera le batteur Lenny White. « Et Miles en était le chef. Chacun portait un casque pour bien entendre tous les autres. Pas d’invités, ni de photographes admis lors des sessions. » Si le maître de cérémonie donne carte blanche à ses sidemen, on peut parfois l’entendre sur le disque, au loin, lâchant quelques consignes. Même son jeu, habituellement cool, est bien plus incisif, voire agressif. En plus des fidèles Wayne Shorter au saxophone, Dave Holland à la basse, Chick Corea au piano électrique et Jack DeJohnette à la batterie, les six thèmes de Bitches Brew réunissent Joe Zawinul, John McLaughlin, Larry Young, Lenny White, Don Alias, Juma Santos et Bennie Maupin. L’autre personnage central, c’est le studio d’enregistrement. Boucles, effets, chambre d’écho et dizaine de collages, Miles et son producteur Teo Macero passent des heures à sculpter cette orgie électrique. Jusqu’à l’overdose comme sur Pharoah’s Dance, composé de 19 éléments séparés ! Un pianiste et un batteur dans la piste de droite. Un autre pianiste et un autre batteur dans la gauche. Bitches Brew est l’œuvre de tous les possibles ! On est loin de la bonne vieille jam-session jazz captée en une seule prise… À l’arrivée, le résultat, sombre et envoûtant, n’est ni purement rock, ni purement funk, ni purement jazz d’ailleurs. Il est… autre !

On the Corner (Columbia – 1972)
On the Corner est l’album de Miles Davis le plus en phase avec les canons du funk. Et pas seulement pour la pochette groovy du dessinateur Corky McCoy… Pour la première fois, le trompettiste est en studio avec plus de 15 musiciens ! Un robuste casting représentatif de l’effervescence de cette musique enregistrée à New York durant l’été 1972. En guise d’épine dorsale, la basse hypnotique de Michael Henderson, un ex-stakhanoviste de chez Motown. Tout autour, des couches jetées en vrac par un Miles qu’on entend finalement peu : bruits blancs assassins (il flanque une wah-wah à sa trompette), percus aux saveurs ethniques, batterie funk marathon (Cold Sweat de James Brown cité çà et là par les fûts de Billy Hart et Jack DeJohnette), implosion totale des règles d’écriture, harmonie et mélodie reléguées au second rang. Aucun doute, ce disque est une mine de sonorités dorées comme ce redoutable effet wah-wah filtré quand Henderson branche sa basse dans une pédale Mu-Tron sur One and One. Dans son autobiographie, Miles ajoute aux influences de James Brown et Sly Stone (que lui a fait découvrir sa femme d’alors, la panthère funk Betty Davis), celles d’Ornette Coleman et surtout du compositeur Karlheinz Stockhausen qui lui aurait indirectement transmis l’utilisation des ajouts et des éliminations comme processus de création musical. Une règle alors majeure dans l’art davisien qui naît tant devant les micros que derrière la console. Râteau commercial et critique, On the Corner et ses motifs répétitifs hypnotiques ne trouveront malheureusement que peu d’échos lors de leur publication en octobre 1972. Car comme toujours, Miles était en avance sur son temps.

Tutu (Warner – 1986)
Si la fin de la carrière de Miles Davis n’est ni la plus féconde, ni la plus renversante artistiquement parlant, elle coïncide avec le sommet de sa notoriété. Quoi qu’il fasse, le trompettiste, qui n’a certes plus rien à prouver, est devenu un intouchable adulé qui fait salle comble aux quatre coins du monde. Du come-back de The Man With the Horn en 1981 à sa mort le 28 septembre 1991 à l’âge de 65 ans, ses enregistrements – très électriques – ont toujours cherché à s’ancrer dans leur époque et à mettre en valeur de jeunes musiciens. Comme toujours avec Miles finalement… Avec sa magnifique pochette (un portrait noir et blanc signé du photographe Irving Penn), le très funky Tutu est l’un des temps forts de cette dernière décennie. En 1986, Miles avait quitté Columbia, son label de (presque) toujours, pour atterrir chez Warner. L’occasion d’un énième nouveau départ musical, d’une énième fusion entre jazz et funk. Fruit de cette renaissance, Tutu est surtout le disque d’un autre musicien : Marcus Miller. Ce bassiste électrique, digne héritier de Jaco Pastorius et Larry Graham, concocta pour le trompettiste un écrin moderne pour son temps qui le propulsera à nouveau sur le devant de la scène. Une étonnante résurrection synthétique qui sonne logiquement très 80’s. « Ma première rencontre avec Miles datait de 1981 », racontera le bassiste vingt ans plus tard. « J’ai passé deux ans dans son groupe, c’était la bénédiction suprême. Mon but restait d’être capable de pouvoir tout faire : écrire, jouer, produire ! En 1986, Miles fit des séances avec Prince mais rien pour satisfaire son nouveau label. J’ai alors écrit en pensant à lui. Il a écouté mes démos et a dit OK tout de suite. En studio, j’étais trop impressionné pour le diriger. « Tu DOIS me dire ce que tu veux que je joue », hurlait-il. Là, j’ai obéi… » En plus des deux hommes, Tutu réunit requins de studio et vétérans, toujours heureux de venir faire une pige pour Miles. Avec George Duke, Omar Hakim, Bernard Wright, Michał Urbaniak, Jason Miles, Paulinho da Costa, Adam Holzman, Steve Reid et Billy Hart, Tutu est la BO parfaite de ce milieu des années 80, lorsque les synthés faisaient la loi et les costards se portaient deux tailles au-dessus. Au milieu de ce décor ultra-codé et très Miami Vice, restent les phrases de Miles, toujours aussi aériennes, poétiques et intemporelles.
