La Britpop est morte, vive la Britpop ! Après le succès aussi grand qu’éphémère d’une multitude de groupes de rock britanniques au milieu des années 90 pour qui tout semblait alors possible, le phénomène s’est éteint aussi rapidement qu’il est apparu. Il aura fallu quelques années, au début du nouveau millénaire, avant que n’émergent à nouveau quelques formations nostalgiques de cette décennie dorée, prêts à reprendre le flambeau de leurs aînés. Après la courte et intense parenthèse Libertines, la nouvelle génération fait son apparition vers 2005 dans un revival Post Punk marqué par l’arrivée de Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, The Futureheads, The Rakes, avant voir revenir des groupes adeptes de mélodies plus légères (Peace, Blossoms, The Pigeon Detectives), toujours sous l’œil bienveillant des survivants des années 90 (Suede, Blur, Jarvis Cocker, Noel Gallagher…).

La britpop en 10 albums

« Si le but du punk était de se débarrasser des hippies, le nôtre est d’en finir avec le grunge. » Lorsque Damon Albarn assène cette phrase en 1993, l’Angleterre s’apprête à reprendre sa place sur un échiquier musical envahi par Seattle avec le grunge et Nirvana. Profondément liée à la vie politique et l’identité locale, la pop britannique se révèle au moment où Tony Blair et le New Labour entrent en scène. Le romantisme anglais redevient attractif par rapport à l’identité américaine, jugée trop creuse outre-Manche. Place à la « Cool Britannia ».

Supergrass - I Should Coco (1995)
« I Should Coco ne ressemblait à rien de ce qui se faisait – Oasis sonnait comme s’ils étaient sous Mogadon comparé à ça. Nous avons vite été embarqués dans la britpop. » Voilà le regard que porte aujourd’hui Gaz Coombes, 19 ans à l’époque de I Should Coco, premier album de Supergrass. Derrière cette pochette d’un goût douteux se cache un des plus brillants albums de la décennie, écoulé à 1 million d’exemplaires – dont la moitié en Angleterre. Repéré par Parlophone après la sortie du single Caught by the Fuzz chez l’indépendant Backbeat, le trio adolescent formé par Gaz Coombes, Danny Goffey à la batterie et Mick Quinn à la basse encapsulent 40 minutes expéditives de pop psyché punk héritée des Kinks, Rolling Stones, Jam et autres Buzzcocks. La fraîcheur candide et incandescente qui s’en dégage fait le sel de cet opus sur la jeunesse anglaise, dont Alright sert d’hymne. « We are young, we run green / Keep our teeth nice and clean / See our friends, see the sights / Feel Alright », répète Gaz. A l’opposé de la mélancolie noyée de Radiohead, Oxford s’offre un bain de jouvence électrique.

Oasis - (What’s the Story) Morning Glory ? (1995)
« J’avais fait promettre à mon manager de m’offrir une Rolls. J’ai une Rolls, Liam une Rolex. C’est super car je ne sais pas conduire et Liam ne sait pas lire l’heure. » Perchés en haut des charts, couchés sur les pages glacées des magazines, ayant atteint leur statut de rock star promis dans Definitely Maybe (Rock’n’roll Star), les mégalos Gallagher poursuivent leur ascension avec (What’s the Story) Morning Glory ?. Alan White a remplacé Tony McCaroll à la batterie, Owen Morris a été dépêché à la production. Malgré une sévère altercation entre Noel et Liam, l’enregistrement sera rapidement soldé. Entamé avec Hello, ce second opus enchaîne les hymnes rock trouvés par Noel Gallagher, la nuit, le nez enfariné. On y retrouve les cultes Wonderwall, Don’t Look Back in Anger, Some Might Say et Champagne Supernova avec un solo de Paul Weller. Entre saturations rock, trésors pop et ballades dépouillées, Noel, qui a gardé pour lui toutes les compositions jusqu’à deux semaines avant les sessions, se surpasse. C’est plus édulcoré, toujours aussi bruyant mais plus riche, du piano de Don’t Look Back in Anger aux cordes de Wonderwall en passant par l’harmonica de The Swamp Song. Avec 15 millions d’albums vendus – un score que McGee pressentait –, Morning Glory inaugure l’Oasismania dont ne se relèveront jamais les Gallagher.

Pulp - Different Class (1995)
1995 est l'année britpop par excellence. C'est aussi l'année de sortie de ce Different Class et du tube Common People, dans lequel Jarvis Cocker écrit la fascination malsaine pour la classe populaire d’une Grecque qu’il draguait. Cocker et Pulp ne sont pourtant pas nés avec la britpop mais presque vingt ans plus tôt. En 1978, à Sheffield, Jarvis et son groupe enfilent les disques sans réel succès, loupant la gloire à chaque rendez-vous. Avec His 'N’ Hers, dont Cocker déteste la production d’Ed Buller, mais surtout avec Different Class, son cinquième effort, Pulp surfe enfin sur une vague qui porte loin. Portant un regard acerbe sur les luttes de classe, l’opus malaxe pop anglaise, disco protéiforme (Disco 2000), expérimentations synthétiques de plus de 6 minutes (F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E), glam classe à la Bowie ou déjanté façon Roxy Music, pour former une pâte brillante prête à être lustrée par le phénomène britpop. Bill Brummond ayant refusé, on retrouve à la production Chris Thomas, qui fera des merveilles. Notamment sur Common People, que Cocker avait ébauché sans conviction sur un petit Casio. Véritable outsider à la hauteur de son auditoire, Pulp, avec sa pop déphasée à textes sexuellement chargés et crus, devient la voix sans filtre et l’un des groupes les plus acides et fascinants d’une époque étrange.

Suede - Coming Up (1996)
Précurseurs perdus dans une compétition dominée par Blur et Oasis, les membres de Suede font tout pour rester en dehors de cette sphère qu'ils jugent formatée. Aujourd’hui encore, Brett Anderson estime avoir fait partie malgré lui de cette déferlante. Après Suede (1993) puis Dog Man Star (1994), le combo originaire du sud de Londres voit partir son guitariste Bernard Butler pour dissensus en plein enregistrement, déchirant le duo flamboyant formé avec Brett Anderson. Qu’importe, le dandy décadent, alter ego pâlot et filiforme du lettré Jarvis Cocker, irradie avec Coming Up, carton de l’année 96, incluant les irascibles Trash et Beautiful Ones, mais aussi les 7 minutes de la romance pop The Chemistry Between Us, Filmstar ou Lazy. Ouvertement inspiré par Bowie et le glam rock des 70’s, ce troisième opus s’écarte de la noirceur complexe des précédents pour déverser un flot de riffs aigus et d’accents dramatiques autour de la voix haut perchée d’Anderson. Une merveille primale quasi punk à la pochette culte signée Peter Saville, héros de l’enfance d’Anderson aux côtés de Joy Division.

The Verve - Urban Hymns (1997)
Bitter Sweet Symphony, la quintessence de The Verve ? Inspiré par les Stones, ce tube n’aura rien rapporté à la bande de Richard Ashcroftsi ce n’est un procès perdu contre Allen Klein, fondateur du label Abkco qui héberge celle de Jagger. The Verve avait bien récupéré les droits d’utilisation de The Last Time des Stones (qui reprenait déjà les Staples Singers), mais Klein a estimé qu’ils avaient pioché plus profond et a récupéré les royalties de la Symphony. Mais il y a d'autres bonnes chansons sur ce Urban Hymns, qui arrive après l’avalanche trip hop. A cette époque, Ashcroft et ses lads venus de Wigan, dans le nord de l’Angleterre, relèvent un temps le nez de la poudre. Elégantes, les orchestrations du groupe crayonnent un spleen anglais rythmé par des matins cotonneux (Velvet Morning), que les drogues n’arrivent pas à édulcorer (The Drugs Don’t Work). D’abord shoegazien avec A Storm in Heaven, puis funk sur A Northern Soul, The Verve suit le sens du vent. Entre la pop languide d’Oasis (Lucky Man, Weeping Willow) et celle, gazeuse, de Radiohead (Space and Time), The Verve conserve son héritage mélodique, fait d’arrangements grandiloquents et de pédales d’effets (The Rolling People). En témoignent les quinze minutes de Come On/Deep Freeze. Sorti au crépuscule de la britpop, Urban Hymns ravive la flamme quelques moments avant son extinction.
