The Doors, l’orchestre de Jim Morrison

Il y a cinquante ans, le 3 juillet 1971, Jim Morrison s’éteignait mystérieusement dans une baignoire parisienne, laissant orphelins ses trois partenaires, Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger et John Densmore, qui ont œuvré sans relâche durant six ans pour transposer ses rêves en musique.

Back to the blues
Pour autant, conscient du mécontentement, le groupe décide de revenir au blues sur l’album suivant, Morrison Hotel (1970). “On voulait revenir à nos bases, racontera Krieger. D’ailleurs, Roadhouse Blues est une des chansons dont je suis le plus fier, parce que ce n’est pas juste un blues comme un autre. Il y a un petit truc de plus qui en fait une chanson. En plus, on l’a enregistrée live, avec John Sebastian de Lovin' Spoonful à l’harmonica et Lonnie Mack qui joue cette fantastique ligne de basse.” Jim Morrison, lui, s’enfile toujours autant d’alcool et va même jusqu’à brutaliser sa compagne Pamela Courson, qui vient de finir sa bouteille pour éviter qu’il ne la boive. C’est Bruce Botnick, l’ingénieur du son, qui mettra fin à l’embrouille, avant de voir repartir le couple bras dessus bras dessous, comme si rien ne s’était passé…

Ce même Bruce Botnick deviendra coproducteur de l’album suivant, L.A. Woman, avec les Doors, débarrassés de leur producteur maniaque Paul Rothchild, qui a décidé de quitter le navire en écoutant les premières démos de l’album, fustigeant notamment Riders on the Storm, “de la musique pour cocktails”. Après un concert désastreux à La Nouvelle-Orléans, avec un Jim incapable de chanter, les Californiens s’installent durant les fêtes de Noël dans un petit immeuble de Santa Monica Boulevard, dans un espace qu’ils surnomment le “Doors' Workshop”, où ils ont leurs habitudes pour répéter. Ils invitent notamment le guitariste de Leon Russell, Marc Benno, et surtout Jerry Scheff, le bassiste d’Elvis Presley, au grand plaisir de Jim, fan du King. Le frontman des Doors est d’ailleurs beaucoup plus à l’aise sans la pression d’un studio professionnel, et, selon Botnick, réduit substantiellement sa consommation d’alcool durant les six jours que dure l’enregistrement.

“Simple et brut, comme notre premier album”, commentera John Densmore dans son autobiographie. Dans cet espace exigu, Jim Morrison se fabrique une cabine de voix dans les toilettes, et utilise son micro de scène, un Electrovoice 676-G doré. Le titre L.A. Woman est enregistré en deux jours, avec une dernière prise en live sur laquelle Jim invente quasiment les paroles sur le moment. “On a commencé à jouer et ça a pris comme par magie. Je me souviens de Jim assis sur les toilettes avec le micro, c’était un super moment”, se remémore Krieger. “Il n’y avait pas de pression, donc on s’amusait de nouveau.”

L’album part au mixage et en mars, Jim part rejoindre Pamela à Paris, pour sortir la tête de l’industrie et éventuellement soigner ses addictions… jusqu’à cette soirée fatale au Rock’n’roll Circus. Il meurt le 3 juillet 1971, moins de trois mois après la sortie de L.A. Woman, laissant les trois autres Doors, orphelins, imaginer un autre destin. “Ç’aurait été super d’avoir un mec comme Sting, expliquait Robby Krieger. Vous voyez, un gars normal qui serait aussi très talentueux. Quelqu’un qui n’aurait pas été entre la vie et la mort à chaque seconde de son existence.”
