John Coltrane, le souffle continu(e)

Il y a un demi-siècle, le saxophoniste américain s’éclipsait à seulement 40 ans, laissant derrière lui de nombreux enregistrements qui ont chamboulé l’histoire de son instrument, celle du jazz mais aussi de la musique du XXe siècle.

L’année suivante, ses complices ont pour noms Pharoah Sanders, Marion Brown et Archie Shepp (sur Ascension). Mais ses orientations de plus en plus libertaires ne conviennent pas à tous ses proches. À l’image du pianiste McCoy Tyner qui le lâche en cette même année 1965, suivi, un an plus tard, par un autre fidèle, le batteur Elvin Jones. C’est un groupe bien différent et marqué « free » qui gravera dans la cire le puissant Live At The Village Vanguard Again !, le 28 mai 1966 : Pharoah Sanders au saxophone et à la flûte, sa femme Alice Coltrane au piano, Jimmy Garrison fidèle au poste à la contrebasse, Rashied Ali à la batterie et Emanuel Rahim aux percussions.

Malgré la fatigue croissante, John Coltrane restera très actif au cours des derniers mois de sa vie, enregistrant en quartet puis en duo avec le batteur Rashied Ali pour ce qui restera comme sa musique la plus extrême et qui paraîtra après sa mort sur Interstellar Space, du free pur publié en 1974… Enregistré en février et mars 1967, Expression, le dernier disque dont il assurera la supervision et qui sortira deux mois après sa mort, réunit Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane, Jimmy Garrison et Rashied Ali. C’est un Coltrane mentalement ailleurs mais qui conserve encore de solides liens avec la tradition, et ce même dans les passages les plus intenses. Quelques concerts suivront parmi lesquels ceux de l’Olatunji Center of African Culture d’Harlem fin avril et du 7 mai à Baltimore, sa dernière prestation live. Le cancer qui attaque son foie ne le lâche alors plus et John Coltrane, qui refuse tout traitement, s’éteint le 17 juillet 1967…
