Avec son ancien employeur Miles Davis, le pianiste Herbie Hancock est l’autre père fondateur du jazz fusion. En 1973, son album "Head Hunters" établit les Saintes Ecritures de l’union la plus réussie entre improvisation jazz et transe psychédélique funk. Coupes afro et platform boots pour tous !

Le succès des Headhunters est immédiat. Hancock a trouvé le dosage parfait entre la subtile liberté du jazz et l’efficacité ravageuse des sonorités funk. Sa musique s’épure progressivement. Abandonnant la graisse de ses compositions pour viser le dépouillement ultime, il met l’accent sur l’interactivité entre tous les musiciens du groupe. Comme Miles lui avait toujours enseigné : apprendre à écouter les autres avant de s’écouter jouer son propre solo. Un Miles qui se retrouvera même un soir en première partie… des Headhunters ! Le monde à l’envers. Une génération entière de musiciens fera de Head Hunters son album de chevet. Il est amusant de constater qu’un tel opus, dépouillé et jamais bavard, poussera certains acteurs de la scène dite jazz-rock à déverser les litres de notes d’une fusion incontinente finalement bien éloignée des théories de Head Hunters. La même équipe (seul Harvey Mason est remplacé par un batteur blanc, Mike Clark) remettra le couvert avec autant d’efficacité sur Thrust (1974) puis Man-Child (1975). Avec le très commercial Secrets (1976), les limites du nouveau son d’Hancock se font sentir. L’efficacité du groove massif est bien présente, mais la subtilité de ses improvisations fait défaut. Hancock poursuivra son voyage électrique avec plus ou moins de réussite, sombrant à la fin des années 70 dans une soupe disco indigne de son pédigrée avant de revenir à ses premières amours acoustiques et, en 1983, de s’aventurer sur le terrain de l’électro et du hip hop naissant avec l’album Future Schock et son prémonitoire single electro Rockit.
