Tilman Skowroneck

A specialist in Baroque harpsichord music and basso continuo practice, Tilman Skowroneck has also taken an interest in the repertoire of the fortepiano and early Classical style. Born in Bremen in 1959, he studied music at The Hague and privately in Amsterdam, counting among his teachers Bob van Asperen, Anneke Uittenbosch, Ton Koopman, and Gustav Leonhardt. Following graduation, he worked as a freelance musician until 1991, when he became a soloist and continuo player with the Swedish period ensemble Corona Artis in Gothenburg. In 1999, he studied fortepiano and performance practice at Cornell University, working with Malcolm Bilson. Skowroneck researched Beethoven's performance practices for his dissertation, and received his Ph.D. in May 2007. In 2010, Cambridge University Press published his book Beethoven the Pianist. On a postdoctoral fellowship from the Swedish Research Council, Skowroneck continued his research into the development of Viennese pianos in the early 19th century. He has served as a senior lecturer of musical performance at the Academy of Music and Drama, University of Gothenburg, and the Gothenburg Organ Centre. Skowroneck is the editor of the online newsletter on historical keyboard studies for the Westfield Center, and he co-edits the journal Keyboard Perspectives. He released Froberger, Couperin, Rameau: Harpsichord Works in 2018 on the German label TYX Art.
