MarMar Oso

This Sacramento, California R&B artist turned heads with his signature Auto-Tuned vocal intros and the late-2018 breakout track "Ruthless (Nice Guys Always Finish Last)." Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, while his father served in the army there, he moved back to the mainland with the family once the post had been completed. He was reputedly a mischievous child, but his extended family, filled with singers and rappers, were influential in guiding him on a musical career. The stage name MarMar Oso stemmed from a temporary social media handle that soon became permanent once the skits he'd dropped it into grew in popularity. He recorded his first track at 19, but it was a video of "Ruthless" that drew the attention of Dave DashO's management company and his Free the Lost imprint. With this help, "Ruthless" became a sustained viral hit, ultimately forming part of his 2018 Mixed Emotions EP. The heartbreak-themed track enjoyed such continuous popularity in his repertoire that it was still topping trending charts in summer 2020. Each of MarMar Oso's seven key single releases of 2019 included an instantly recognizable Auto-Tuned declaration of "Okay," an audio fingerprint consolidating his identity and singularity in a crowded market. Individuality was also clearly a going concern on Oso Different, his summer 2019 debut full-length album on which he continued to wholly focus on singing, while his peers' records at the time saw them switch between singing and rapping. By January 2020 he had signed a distribution deal with Empire; the first fruit was the single "Choosin'." The following month he self-issued "Can't Think," a tribute to his best friend Anthony Young Hayne (aka Steezy), who had taken his own life. Next, the mainstream singles "Ride or Die," "Dream Girl," and "Let Me Love You" all pre-empted his second full-length album, Love Don't Cost a Thing, which arrived in May and featured TeeJay3k, Luh Kel, and Derek King.
