Markus Poschner

Markus Poschner has been chief conductor of the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana and the Bruckner Orchester Linz, and he has recorded with both groups. Also active as a jazz pianist, Poschner is a significant educator. Poschner was born in 1971 in Munich. He attended the city's University of Music and Performing Arts, studying conducting with Hermann Michael. Poschner also benefited from mentorship and support on the part of Colin Davis, Jorma Panula, and Roger Norrington; in 2003, he participated in Norrington's pathbreaking recording of Beethoven's nine symphonies on the Hänssler Classic label. Poschner served from 2000 to 2006 as chief conductor of the Georgisches Kammerorchester Ingolstadt, a chamber orchestra from the Republic of Georgia that had moved to Germany. In 2004, Poschner won the German Conductors' Prize, and this began to attract guest conducting invitations from around Europe; he has appeared with major orchestras around Germany as well as many groups abroad, including the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, the Wiener Kammerorchester, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Chile, and both the NHK Symphony Orchestra and the Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra in Japan. In 2007, he became General Music Director of the City of Bremen, which entailed conductorships of the Bremer Philharmoniker and of the operatic productions at the Theater Bremen. He has also appeared as a guest operatic conductor with the Staatsoper Berlin and the Komische Oper Berlin and at other German houses as well as the Opernhaus Zürich in Switzerland. Since 2010, Poschner has been on the faculty at the University of Bremen, teaching musicology and music education courses. With the 2015-2016 season, Poschner became the chief conductor of the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, Switzerland. In his first season there, he mounted a cycle of Brahms symphonies entitled "Rereading Brahms"; those performances were filmed and won an International Classical Music Award in 2018 for Best DVD Performance. He also made recordings of music by Strauss and Saint-Saëns with the orchestra. Poschner was also named chief conductor of the Bruckner Orchester Linz, beginning in the 2017-2018 season. With that group, he began a cycle of Bruckner symphonies for the Capriccio label in which he has also led the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony; his recording of the Bruckner Symphony No. 8 in C minor with the Linz orchestra appeared on Capriccio in 2023. Poschner has also continued to conduct opera, leading a recording of Offenbach's operetta Maître Péronilla with the Orchestre National de France for the Palazzetto Bru Zane label in 2020.
