Lava La Rue

Based out of West London, rapper/vocalist Lava La Rue incorporates both mellow golden-era hip-hop beats and futuristic R&B elements into their stylistically fluid hybrid sound. After releasing multiple tracks and EPs, La Rue issued the trappy mixtape Stitches in 2019, then moved in more of a neo-soul direction with subsequent EPs Butter-Fly (2021) and Hi-Fidelity (2022). Lava La Rue was born Ava Laurel and grew up in and out of foster care, working on music as a teenager and going so far as to form experimental musical collective NiNE8 with other friends working on boundary-pushing sounds. La Rue was sharing songs online as early as 2015, and released several EPs and stand-alone tracks before their 2018 project Letra garnered attention for its relaxed beats and laid-back flows. Letra was the partially the result of an extended period of time that La Rue had spent living in Tokyo and working with producer Disk Nagataki. Inspired by their work with the producer, La Rue returned to London and finished work on Letra, opening the floodgates for new music. Several new tracks in 2019 traded in old-school rap production for more trap elements and R&B hooks, and the nine-song release Stitches collected the highlights. In 2020, La Rue continued their evolution, issuing the electronic-tinged R&B/rap track "G.O.Y.D." and the more pop-centric "Angel," featuring guest vocals from Deb Never. The 2021 EP Butter-Fly mixed U.K. rap and alternative R&B, and the neo-soul EP Hi-Fidelity followed in 2022.
