GUNSHIP

Combining sleek, melodic synthwave with a decidedly retro-futuristic aesthetic, England's Gunship have earned an international following and an eclectic roster of collaborators that ranges from director/composer John Carpenter to celebrity tattoo artist and singer Kat Von D. They have released three albums including 2018's Dark All Day and 2023's guest-heavy Unicorn. Formed in 2014 by former Fightstar members Alex Westway and Dan Haigh, along with Alex Gingell, Gunship carved their bright synth-wave sound and visual appeal from '80s culture, bringing together elements of film, TV, video games, and futuristic pop under one neon umbrella. The group issued their self-titled debut record in 2015. The album was accompanied by an innovative music video for the single "Tech Noir," on which they collaborated with notorious sci-fi/horror director and soundtrack pioneer John Carpenter, with direction from Lee Hardcastle. Three years later, Gunship returned with their sophomore effort, Dark All Day which featured a number of notable collaborators including Wil Weaton, Kat Von D, and saxophonist Tim Capello of Lost Boys fame. It topped the U.K. dance chart as well as Billboard's Heatseekers chart. A year later they were featured in the 2019 documentary film Rise of the Synths, which examined the burgeoning synthwave scene. Gunship also released a handful of collaborative stand-alone singles like "Berserker" with Tyler Bates and Dave Lombardo, and "Ghost" with Melbourne duo Power Glove. By the time they completed 2023's Unicorn, their third full-length, the band's external roster had swelled to include guests like Bush's Gavin Rossdale, Luna's Britta Phillips, and Charlie Simpson.
