Emiliano Gonzalez Toro

Tenor Emiliano Gonzalez Toro is a major specialist in the music of Monteverdi and other early Baroque composers. The founder of the ensemble I Gemelli, he often conducts performances in which he sings. Gonzalez Toro was born in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1976. His parents were Chileans who had fled to Romania after the 1973 military coup in Chile and then entered Switzerland as illegal immigrants with the help of a church group; he finally obtained Swiss citizenship at 18. His father worked as a storekeeper; his mother was a nurse. At the age of eight, he joined a children's choir, Les Pueri, which performed regularly at the Grand Théâtre de Genève. Gonzalez Toro's first instrument was the oboe, which he studied at the conservatories of Geneva and Lausanne, obtaining a Virtuoso's degree from the latter in 2000. At that point, Gonzalez Toro switched to singing, taking lessons from Marga Liskutin, Anthony Rolfe Johnson, and Ruben Amoretti. He joined the Ensemble Vocal de Lausanne under director Michel Corboz and resolved to pursue a career in early music. He soon began to find engagements with major Baroque groups such as Les Arts Florissants, Les Musiciens du Louvre, and Les Talens Lyriques. He made his recording debut in 2003 on the album Ad Vesperas Beatae Mariae Virginis, featuring music by Monteverdi and Alessandro Grandi, and 17th century music has continued to be his principal focus. During the 2010s, Gonzalez Toro sang Baroque operatic roles at major houses, including Eurimaco in Monteverdi's Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris in 2018. Gonzalez Toro married soprano Mathilde Etienne in 2014, and in 2019, the pair founded the ensemble I Gemelli. Work with that group allowed Gonzalez Toro to pursue a dual role as tenor and conductor on releases such as the group's Soleil Noir, a Baroque aria recital which appeared on the Naïve label in 2020. I Gemelli also released a recording of Monteverdi's L'Orfeo that year. They moved to their own Gemelli Factory label for a recording of Il ritorni d'Ulisse in patria in 2023.
