Distant

Dutch/Slovakian outfit Distant play a brutal mix of chugging riffs, machine gun drums, and guttural vocal screams for their blend of slamming brutal metal and deathcore. Debuting in 2014, the band issued three studio albums -- 2019's Tyrannotophia, 2021's Aeons of Oblivion, and 2023's Heritage -- along with a slew of singles and EPs. Originally formed in Rotterdam in 2014 by guitarist Nouri Yetgin and bassist Elmer Maurits, Distant broke from the ranks of the mainly hardcore sound of their local scenes by playing their own mix of deathcore and metal. Slowly building a scene single-handedly, the group, which also featured Gene Troust on guitar and Shainel Ramharakh on drums, issued their debut single, "Gallant" in 2014. The double A-side single "Slither/2K15" appeared a year later. Following a line-up change which saw them introduce Slovakia-based vocalist Alan Grnja to their ranks, the group continued to tour and write new material, with the EP Tsukuyomi appearing in mid-2017. Signing to Unique Leader the following year, the band started to prep material for their debut album. Produced and recorded by Yetgin, Tyrannotophia was issued in 2019, and saw the group build on their already extreme sound. With tours booked to support the release, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and the band put all touring on the backburner. Using the downtime to their advantage, they wrote and recorded a series of EPs that would tie together the fictional world they had created with their debut album. Dawn of Corruption appeared in 2020, with Dusk of Anguish a few months later in early 2021. The EPs were compiled with other material to form the basis of their sophomore album, Aeons of Oblivion -- the 19-track release was issued in mid-2021. With touring back on the agenda, the rescheduled dates saw the band head out in support of their second album instead of their debut. Distant had also parted ways with Trout and Ramharakh, and Jan Mato was recruited to play drums while Vladimir Golic stood in on guitar. The group continued to play sold-out shows across Europe and the U.K. before starting work on their third full-length. Inking a deal with Century Media, the label issued Heritage in early 2023. They once again toured the U.S., Europe, and the U.K. in support. At the end of 2023, drummer Jan Mato left the band, and Rene Gerbrandij stepped in for touring duties.
