David Reiland

Conductor David Reiland specializes in contemporary music and in neglected music of the 19th century. He is the music director of the Orchestre National de Metz in France, with which he has issued a growing body of recordings, and the Korean National Symphony Orchestra. Reiland was born in Bastogne, Belgium, on June 18, 1979. His musical education began at the Royal Academy of Music in Brussels, where he studied conducting, composition, and saxophone. Reiland went on for conducting studies at the Alfred Cortot Academy of Music in Paris and the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, Austria. Reiland rounded out his education with master classes from Pierre Boulez, David Zinman, Bernard Haitink, Jorma Panula, and Mariss Jansons. He won the Melgaard OAE Young Conductor Competition in 2012 and landed posts as assistant conductor at the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in London, where he worked with conductors Mark Elder, Vladimir Jurowski, Roger Norrington, and Simon Rattle, and as music director of the Orchestre de Chambre de Luxembourg. He also began to land guest appearances around Europe and beyond with the likes of such groups as the Gewandhaus Orchestra of Leipzig, the Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra, and the Munich Radio Orchestra; with the latter group, he made his debut album, leading a program of works by Benjamin Godard in 2016. In 2018, Reiland became the music director of the Orchestre National de Metz in France. He has favored little-known works in his programming, exploring the music of such composers as Godard, Daniel Auber, Albrecht Huybrechts, and Augusta Holmès. He has also programmed contemporary works, and he brought the Orchestre National de Metz to the Rainy Days contemporary music festival at the Luxembourg Philharmonie. Reiland has also been active as an opera conductor, developing a large repertory of Italian and French works and appearing at houses in Geneva, Antwerp, Seoul, and several German cities. In 2019, he conducted Les Frivolités de Paris in a performance of Auber's opera La Sirène for the Naxos label. In 2021, Reiland was named the music director of the Korean National Symphony Orchestra; he has also guest conducted at the Korean National Opera. He has made several recordings with the Orchestre National de Metz for the La Dolce Volta label, including Poétesses Symphoniques, featuring works by neglected French female composers, in 2023.
