Corey Harper

The Portland, Oregon-born singer/songwriter and deft guitarist throws layers of slick pop, blues, and soul onto the earnest folk-rock with which he set out his stall in the mid-2010s. One of three siblings, he was born in 1994 and, as a child, discovered a guitar at his uncle's house in St. Louis, Missouri. This led to a lifelong obsession with the instrument, further fueled by Fleetwood Mac and Jackson Browne being played by his parents. Much of his early life was spent in Washington where, from afar, he developed an enthusiasm for British culture and English football. Harper returned to Oregon to study music and literature in Eugene, but soon dropped out. In 2013, he moved to L.A. in pursuit of a music career, spending the next couple of years playing live in bars. In April 2015, Harper self-released his debut single, "Reeling," a heavily Ryan Adams-inspired solo acoustic folk piece. Around this time, he was a touring guitarist for the Australian swimmer and singer/songwriter Cody Simpson. Next came an offer from Justin Bieber to support him on the first three dates of the Canadian artist's 2016 Purpose tour. Bieber spotted him at Winston House in Venice Beach, a venue owned by the entrepreneur Matt Graham, who eventually went on to manage Harper. If "Reeling" nodded to Adams, July 2016's "California Sun" -- released on Tuxedo Records -- was a pop take on Whiskeytown's full-band sound. Further singles were released that year, all of which ultimately appeared on his debut EP, On the Run, alongside a gentle cover of Bruce Springsteen's "I'm on Fire." He soon moved to a house in Venice Beach with his partner. 2017 brought a number of singles with disparate styles: the band-led acoustic folk of "Favorite Part of Loving You," the funky blues-rock of "No Good Alone," and the Bon Iver-inspired "I Fall Apart." By the year's end, he'd also toured with One Direction's Niall Horan. Comparatively, 2018 was quiet for Harper, although he did release "Wild Nights," which betrayed a stylized pop sound amidst its heavy drums. April 2019's "Don't Hate Me" found him on more familiar footing: acoustic guitar-driven pop with R&B-inspired vocals. To promote the track, he supported the prolific songwriter Julia Michaels on a couple of dates. Three additional singles -- "Dried Blood," "Better," and "Best of Me" -- were featured on Harper's August 2019 EP, Barely Put Together. That year also brought a Jam in the Van session, while a third EP, Overcast, appeared in June 2020. Harper's last release prior to starting work on his full-length debut was a rendition of the Bee Gees' 1969 hit "I Started a Joke." Fresh from a relationship break-up, he collaborated on new material with Alex Salibian, who had previously worked with Harry Styles and Jess Glynne. September 2022's Future Tense was mainly written and recorded between Portland and L.A., although a three-month secondment to London was also important in its genesis.
