CairoKee

Formed in 2003 in Cairo, Egypt, Cairokee is a rock band known for their politically-charged lyrics. Friends since their school days, the band is comprised of lead vocalist Amier Eid, lead guitarist Sherif Hwary, drummer Tamer Hashem, keyboardist Sherif Mostafa, and bassist Adam el-Alfy. Originally, they were known as Black Star and played covers of English-language songs. They only performed one song – “Ghariba” – in Egyptian, but because of the audience’s reaction to it, they switched to playing songs sung in their native language. The band didn’t get really serious about recording their own material until after the Egyptian Revolution of 2011. They released the hit single “Sout El Horeya” in 2011. The single achieved more than two million streams on social media. Their next single, “Ya El Midan” featured legendary Egyptian singer/songwriter Aida el Ayoubi. The release of the song “Ethbat Makanak” was followed by their debut album Matloob Zaeem in June, 2011. Their second album, Wana Maa Nafsy Aad, was released in 2012. The band played many high profile shows that coincided with various political events in Egypt. The band’s third album, El Sekka Shemal, was released in 2014. Entering into their most commercially successful period, the band released the albums Nas w Nas (2015), Noaata beida (2017) and The Ugly Ducklings (2019).
