A Dead Forest Index

An atmosphere-driven, sibling-led nomadic pop duo based out of Auckland, New Zealand, A Dead Forest Index cite a wide range of influences, including William Blake, Scott Walker, Nico, Swans, and Romanian lăutari troupe Taraf de Haidouks. Founded by brothers Adam and Sam Sherry, the project began in 2008 as a solo vehicle for the former, with Sam joining the fold in 2010. Adam's androgynous, otherworldly voice, which invokes Antony and the Johnsons, early Marianne Faithful, and the aforementioned Nico, is bolstered by multi-instrumentalist Sam's inventive production work, and the overall effect suggests a steady diet of early 4AD bands like Dead Can Dance, Bauhaus, and This Mortal Coil. Between 2012 and 2014, the duo honed their sound on the road and issued a pair of EPs, Antique and Cast of Lines, the latter of which arrived via Jehnny Beth of Savages’ Pop Noire label. The band's much anticipated full-length debut, the Sargent House-issued In All That Drifts from Summit Down, followed in 2016.
