Kanye West est sorti exténué de sa course à l’innovation et à l’instinct total époque Life of Pablo. A bout de souffle, il interrompt sa tournée et disparaît des radars pendant plusieurs mois. Le vide l’emporte, le repos est nécessaire. Finalement les regards se tournent vers un ranch perdu au fin fond du Wyoming où l’artiste convalescent reprend doucement la dure randonnée vers la création. Les semaines passent et de nombreux artistes prestigieux passent par l’état le moins peuplé des Etats Unis pour travailler avec leur génie contemporain. Après une année de gestation, Kanye et son équipe décident de sortir chaque semaine un sept titres extraits de toutes ces sessions au milieu de nulle part. 

Après Pusha T, c’est donc au tour de Kanye West en solo de proposer son album condensé. Attendu au tournant après ces déclarations controversées sur Trump et la libre-pensée, le rappeur de Chicago se permet d’éluder tout sujet politique pour se concentrer sur son trouble bipolaire. Avec des morceaux et une pochette terminés le jour même de la sortie, Kanye joue toujours la carte de l’instantané, le polaroid musical de son esprit et de son imaginaire. Oscillant entre schizophrénie meurtrière (I Thought About Killing You, Yikes) et réflexions sur l’amour de soi, le développement personnel (Ghost Town, No Mistakes), Kanye effleure seulement l’introspection complète mais donne facilement à voir ses fêlures, les offrant en pâture à ce monde sans vergogne. Musicalement, Kanye West est toujours un chef d’orchestre hors du commun. Il utilise chaque interprète avec une justesse incroyable : une étoile montante 070 Shake, tout en émotion, et les toujours précieux Ty Dolla $ign, Jeremih, Charlie Wilson ou Kid Cudi. Mélangeant l’approche bruitiste saturée de Yeezus à celle plus grandiloquente et dramatique de My Beautiful Twisted Dark Fantasy, Kanye réalise des épopées 16/9e de son cerveau trituré avec un souffle tragique toujours millimétré.

Plus forcé que Life of Pablo, Ye en simplifie pourtant les grands écarts compliqués pour garder cette essence de l’instant. Terminant en forme de question sur la future adolescence de sa fille North avec Violent Crimes, ce huitième album de Kanye West est une charnière tortueuse en forme de thérapie musicale où chaque force devient une faiblesse et inversement.
