Le séant de Weezer a toujours hésité quant à l’endroit où se poser. Pop indé ou pop mainstream ? Un dilemme que le groupe californien a plus ou moins zappé d’un revers de main en donnant à manger à ses fans les plus exigeants comme au grand public. Ce quatrième album éponyme de Weezer qui se différencie, comme ses trois prédécesseurs, par la couleur de sa pochette, est aussi le premier album-concept depuis Pinkerton, un genre que la bande de Rivers Cuomo affectionne beaucoup. Pour cet album blanc produit par Jake Sinclair (plutôt habitué à bidouiller du Taylor Swift, du Fall Out Boy, du P!nk ou du 5 Seconds of Summer), la thématique voulue est des plus estivales. La plage, son décor, ses acteurs, ses ambiances… Côté son, la volonté de revenir à une atmosphère Beach Boys grunge semble clairement à l’ordre du jour. Et chaque chanson de ce album blanc est toujours un alliage plus que parfait entre le sucre de la pop et le tranchant de puissantes guitares.
