Après Shadows In The Night (2015) et Fallen Angel (2016), Bob Dylan ne change pas de main et continue son périple au pays des reprises piochées dans le Great American Songbook. Sauf que cette fois, le Zim est au sommet de sa gloutonnerie avec un triple album ! Logiquement intitulé Triplicate, il réunit trois disques de dix chansons. Rangées selon la thématique de leur titre – Til The Sun Goes Down, Devil Dolls et Comin' Home Late – ces trente standards ont été portés à bout de voix par les Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole et autres Billie Holiday. Certaines sont plus que tubesques (Stormy Weather, As Time Goes By, These Foolish Things…), d’autres plus confidentielles (Where Is The One, Braggin',…). Comme à l’accoutumée, la garde rapprochée de Dylan (Tony Garnier à la basse, Donny Herron à la steel, Charlie Sexton et Stu Kimball aux guitares et George G. Receli aux percussions) lui a conçu un écrin sublime. Un manteau plus crépusculaire que flamboyant. D’un raffinement bouleversant, tout en retenu, avec un nuage de pedal steel ici, une batterie feutrée là, quelques notes de guitares susurrées un peu plus loin… Et comme pour ses deux précédents disques, le maire de cérémonie se montre à nouveau vulnérable et sans fard. Touchant comme jamais. Tel un ancien chantant pour ses jeunes descendants d’antiques rengaines aux teintes sépia, assis au coin de la cheminée, il stoppe le temps et neutralise les modes. Le Great American Songbook est fait pour être traité de la sorte – Willie Nelson avec Stardust, Bryan Ferry avec As Time Goes By et Jimmy Scott avec All The Way l’avaient bien compris – et Dylan ne s’est guère trompé dans sa façon de s’approprier ses rengaines intemporelles. A l’heure où le rock’n’roll n’a jamais été aussi consensuel et ne choque même pas la plus austère grenouille de bénitier, la vraie rébellion est peut-être, toujours et encore, dans le contrepied de ses superbes reprises, non ? © MZ/Qobuz
