Succéder à la réussite totale que fut good kid, m.A.A.d city en 2012 relevait de l'exploit pour le rappeur américain Kendrick Lamar. C'est pourtant avec brio que ce dernier livre un digne successeur à l'un des opus hip-hop les plus importants de son époque tout en exhibant de nouveaux aspects de sa personnalité et une prise de conscience de tout ce qui fait le passage à l'âge adulte, comme l'acceptation de ses limites et de sa propre finitude. Cerise sur le gâteau, Lamar revisite le temps de ce nouvel album la plupart des facettes de la musique afro-américaine moderne et s'adjoint les services de plusieurs représentants de cette dernière comme George Clinton, Pharrell Williams, Bilal ou encore Snoop Dogg.
