« Je suis le grand zombie », croassait Dr. John en français créole sur I Walk on Guilded Splinters, à l’époque (1968) de son envoûtant premier album, le classique Gris Gris. En 2022, il la chante encore sur Things Happen That Way. Et pourtant, Dr John est mort en 2019 à l’âge de 77 ans. En plus d’être un musicien historique de La Nouvelle-Orléans, un élégant géant du jazz et du rhythm’n’blues, Dr. John était donc bien un grand zombie, de retour avec ce ravissant album posthume où on le découvre dans un registre plutôt nouveau pour lui : la country. Au milieu de quelques compositions personnelles inédites, il reprend des chansons de Willie Nelson, Hank Williams, Cowboy Jack Clement ou des Traveling Wilburys. Et bien sûr – sorcellerie ! –, ça sonne comme du Dr. John, avec cette voix de vieux saurien nonchalant et ce piano qui groove et chaloupe en douceur. Comme ses contemporains Ray Charles et Willie Nelson, Dr. John est à la fois un styliste unique (on reconnaît sa musique à la première seconde), un sage et un touche-à-tout surdoué et gourmand, qui n’aurait su se contenter de jouer le même genre musical toute sa vie. Terminé après sa mort, Things Happen That Way est une vraie réussite et devient meilleur à chaque écoute. Sa voix est forcément plus fragile que sur des enregistrements plus anciens, mais les musiciens, des cuivres aux choristes, garantissent la bonne tenue funky de l'ensemble. Et quand Aaron Neville ou Willie Nelson lui donnent la réplique sur une paire de chansons, c’est une nouvelle chaîne de sommets qui émerge dans le delta du Mississippi. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz
