« C’est son métissage qui rend la musique américaine si puissante ! » Rhiannon Giddens, prénom gaélique, père blanc, mère noire, origine occanechi, incarne le brassage des cultures nord-américaines. Soprano colorature préférant les voix impénétrables du folk, soul, blues et bluegrass plutôt que l’opéra, Giddens sort son troisième effort. Repérée par les frères Coen (Inside Llewyn Davis aux côtés d’Elvis Costello), invitée par T-Bone Burnett, passée par Carolina Chocolate Drops, la Maison Blanche, auteur de deux albums solo acclamés et un premier avec Our Native Daughters (réunissant Leyla McCalla, Allison Russell et Amysthyst Kiah), la quadra a déjà bien cravaché. En collaboration avec le multi-instrumentiste Francesco Turrisi, produit par l’excellent Joe Henry en cinq jours à Dublin, There Is No Other convoque compositions originales et reprises des anciens, sur fond de musique traditionnelle arabe, d’influence celtique et italienne. On retrouve ainsi I’m Gonna Write Me a Letter d’Ola Belle Reed, Brown Baby de l’activiste Oscar Brown Jr, ou, dans un autre genre, la Pizzica di San Vito ou l’air Black Swan de Menotti.
