Venant de perdre son père au moment d’entrer en studio pour The Soul Cages, Sting, complètement orphelin désormais, nourrit l’album entier (son troisième en solo) de sa peine, et du sentiment de la perte irréparable. Dans la continuité de Nothing Like the Sun, le disque – un album conceptuel qui conte la destinée de Billy, jeune garçon représentant d’une famille ouvrière - creuse le sillon de tempi médiums, et d’un rock-jazz élégant, raffiné, terriblement bien joué et, parfois, terriblement ennuyeux. On retrouve naturellement au côté du chanteur ses compagnons virtuoses, le saxophoniste Branford Marsalis en tête, suivi de près par le batteur Manu Katché, et le percussionniste Ray Cooper. Malheureusement, l’ancien leader de Police n’évite pas systématiquement les pièges tendus de l’auto-complaisance, et du nombrilisme dolent. Il faudrait en fait une terrible empathie avec le Britannique pour adhérer à chaque instant à son désarroi : après tout, si le chanteur utilise The Soul Cages comme une thérapie, il convient de rappeler que l’auditeur, quant à lui, achète un produit manufacturé pour le plaisir. The Soul Cages parviendra au sommet des hit-parades britanniques (et en deuxième place en Amérique), et la chanson-titre (7ème aux États-Unis, et qui permettra à Sting de se voir honoré du Grammy Award de la meilleure chanson rock de l’année), et « All This Time » (5ème) en seront les émérites singles.
