En juin 73, James Brown a beau perdre son fils Teddy dans un accident de voiture, la cadence de sa production ne ralentit pas. Même la qualité suit comme sur les deux bandes originales qu'il signe avec Fred Wesley : Black Caesar et Slaughter's Big Rip-Off. Des superbes enregistrements funk qui annoncent ce mythologique et archi-samplé The Payback qui parait en décembre 1973. A l'origine, les compositions de cet opus devaient servir à la bande originale du film Hell Up In Harlem, mais elles seront rejetées par les producteurs déclarant qu'il s'agit "toujours de ce même vieux son James Brown. Pas assez funky"... Au final, The Payback sera certifié disque d'or. Avec le recul, les spécialistes le considèrent comme un album clef de la période la plus funky du Godfather. Son groove répétitif et lancinant, transe hypnotique slalomant entre soul et funk, est même devenu une signature propre à la star. Quelques années plus tard, on ne comptera plus les rappeurs ayant pillé The Payback pour trouver le sample qui fait mouche... © MD/Qobuz
