En 2002, Nas sortait The Lost Tapes, belle compilation d’inédits enregistrés entre 1998 et 2001 pour ses albums I Am… (1999) et Stillmatic (2001) mais finalement rejetés. Les douze titres, loin d’être des rogatons de seconde zone, rappelaient surtout le calibre du rappeur de Queensbridge en matière de punchlines mortelles et de flow redoutable… 17 ans plus tard, The Lost Tapes 2 exhume d’autres trésors enregistrés cette fois à l’époque de ses albums Hip Hop Is Dead (2006), Untitled (2008), Life Is Good (2012) et Nasir (2018). Def Jam Records devait publier ce deuxième volume en 2010 mais un conflit opposant le rappeur à son label expédia malheureusement les bandes au placard… Eté 2019, la malle aux trésors s’ouvre enfin avec des pépites produites notamment par Pharrell, RZA, Kanye West, Swizz Beatz, No I.D. ou bien encore Pete Rock. Un casting 5 étoiles – plus senior que junior – qui rend l’affaire essentielle et lui confère une saveur old school délicieuse. Surtout, l’éclectisme du matériel, dans ses sons comme dans ses textes, n’empêche jamais de perdre le fil. C’est évidemment la voix reconnaissable entre mille de Nas qui sert de liant à cette compilation. Mais ses fans savent de toute façon que dès son premier album, le chef d’œuvre Illmatic (1994), le New-yorkais aimait s’entourer de centaines de magiciens (MC Serch, Faith N., DJ Premier, L.E.S., Pete Rock, Large Professor, Q-Tip, Rockwilder, Vibesmen, Nick Fury et Marley Marl ont participé à Illmatic) sans pour autant perdre sa personnalité. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
