Au début de ce XXIe siècle, l’adaptation cinématographique du premier volet du Seigneur des anneaux par Peter Jackson a donné l’occasion au Canadien Howard Shore de composer l’une de ses œuvres les plus ambitieuses. Et pourtant, à l’annonce de sa participation au projet, certaines réactions étaient pour le moins dubitatives. Compositeur des films de David Cronenberg, mais aussi de Ed Wood, After Hours et Mrs. Doubtfire, Shore était alors surtout réputé pour ses sonorités souvent dissonantes et complexes. Certes, on retrouve une certaine noirceur dans la BO de La Communauté de l’anneau, notamment dans l’emploi de cordes inquiètes, de percussions puissantes et de cuivres menaçants (Khazad Dum). Mais l’aspect merveilleux et héroïque qui caractérise l’atmosphère du récit de Tolkien n’est pas négligé par Howard Shore. On retiendra notamment l’utilisation récurrente de la voix. Celle-ci s’exprime non seulement de manière colossale sous la forme d’un chœur, mais aussi à travers les solos de chanteuses connues pour leur timbre éthéré : l’Ecossaise Elizabeth Fraser (chanteuse de Cocteau Twins) dans Caras Galadhon, et l’Irlandaise Enya dans The Council of Elrond Assembles et May It Be. Le caractère ancestral de ces morceaux est renforcé à la fois par le recours régulier à la musique celtique, mais aussi par le fait que les paroles sont écrites dans la langue inventée par Tolkien. Enfin, citons quelques grands thèmes servant à personnifier les protagonistes du film, ainsi que leur principale qualité : la noblesse pour Frodon (The Shire), ou bien l’amabilité festive des hobbits (Very Old Friends). Descriptif de l'album
Au début de ce XXIe siècle, l’adaptation cinématographique du premier volet du Seigneur des anneaux par Peter Jackson a donné l’occasion au Canadien Howard Shore de composer l’une de ses œuvres les plus ambitieuses. Et pourtant, à l’annonce de sa participation au projet, certaines réactions étaient pour le moins dubitatives. Compositeur des films de David Cronenberg, mais aussi de Ed Wood, After Hours et Mrs. Doubtfire, Shore était alors surtout réputé pour ses sonorités souvent dissonantes et complexes. Certes, on retrouve une certaine noirceur dans la BO de La Communauté de l’anneau, notamment dans l’emploi de cordes inquiètes, de percussions puissantes et de cuivres menaçants (Khazad Dum). Mais l’aspect merveilleux et héroïque qui caractérise l’atmosphère du récit de Tolkien n’est pas négligé par Howard Shore. On retiendra notamment l’utilisation récurrente de la voix. Celle-ci s’exprime non seulement de manière colossale sous la forme d’un chœur, mais aussi à travers les solos de chanteuses connues pour leur timbre éthéré : l’Ecossaise Elizabeth Fraser (chanteuse de Cocteau Twins) dans Caras Galadhon, et l’Irlandaise Enya dans The Council of Elrond Assembles et May It Be. Le caractère ancestral de ces morceaux est renforcé à la fois par le recours régulier à la musique celtique, mais aussi par le fait que les paroles sont écrites dans la langue inventée par Tolkien. Enfin, citons quelques grands thèmes servant à personnifier les protagonistes du film, ainsi que leur principale qualité : la noblesse pour Frodon (The Shire), ou bien l’amabilité festive des hobbits (Very Old Friends). À travers sa richesse de langages musicaux, cette BO pose les bases d’une trilogie essentielle de l’histoire du cinéma. ©Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
