Le supergroupe country composé de Maren Morris, Brandi Carlile, Amanda Shires and Natalie Hemby – autrement dit, The Highwomen – ne parle pas, Dieu merci, de girl power. C’est plutôt une démonstration de force, de la part de quatre femmes aux voix en pleine puissance. Elles harmonisent mieux que quiconque sur le très eighties "Redesigning Women," et l’amourette-rodeo de "Heaven Is a Honky Tonk", mais c’est tout aussi entraînant lorsqu’elles s’échangent des couplets, comme sur le swing diabolique de « My Name Can’t Be Mama » et le lonesome-West du titre éponyme, co-écrit avec Jimmy Webb (qui a composé Highwayman, rendu célèbre par Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson et Kris Kristofferson, qui ont adopté le sobriquet pour leur quatuor en 1985). Morris est sous tous les projecteurs pour Loose Change, qui met en valeur la finesse de ses paroles à base de métaphores : « I'm gonna be somebody's lucky penny someday / instead of rolling around your pocket like loose change.» Carlile rayonne comme une star pour l’excellent Wheels of Laredo et If She Ever Leaves Me – une prise de possession romantique, racontée d’un point de vue lesbien. Même si elles n’ont pas autant de notoriété, Shires (Don’t Call Me, cinglant de vérité) et Hemby (My Only Child rappelle Anne Murray) sont loin d’être au second plan.
