Avec l’album « blanc » des Beatles, cette bande originale du célèbre film de Mike Nichols qui révéla Dustin Hoffman est le plus gros succès commercial international de l’année 1968, n°1 pendant plus de deux mois aux USA.
D’un point de vue artistique par contre, il n’a que peu d’intérêt. La majorité des morceaux étaient déjà parus, mais il fût l’occasion pour ceux qui l’avaient manqué trois ans plus tôt, de découvrir « The Sounds of Silence ». Quant à la ritournelle aux nappes de guitares sèches et à son « oukoukachou » (n°1 aux USA) de Paul Simon « Mrs. Robinson », elle a fait le tour du monde et celui d’Anne Bancroft.
