Lorsque les noms de Miles Davis et John Coltrane se retrouvent à la même affiche, le frison est déjà à portée de main. Avec ce sixième épisode des Bootleg Series du trompettiste, il se transforme même – doux euphémisme – en extase. The Final Tour se concentre sur le dernier chapitre de la collaboration entre Miles et Coltrane. Sur quatre CD, il comprend des performances enregistrées dans le cadre de leur tournée européenne de 1960 – la dernière ensemble – avant la mort du saxophoniste en juillet 1967. On y retrouve les deux concerts de l’Olympia à Paris le 21 mars 1960, les deux du 22 mars à Stockholm et celui du 24 mars à Copenhague, le tout disponible pour la première fois à partir des bandes analogues ¼ pouces.

Ces cinq concerts se déroulent un an à peine après la sortie du chef-d’œuvre Kind of Blue qui a violemment secoué la jazzosphère. La puissance nucléaire créative des protagonistes est ici telle que le quintet est à chaque seconde au bord de l’implosion. Avec le pianiste Wynton Kelly, le contrebassiste Paul Chambers et le batteur Jimmy Cobb, Miles comme Trane livrent des improvisations torrentielles dans lesquels la fusion comme l’opposition sautent aux oreilles. Mais miraculeusement, tout tient, rien ne s’effondre. Au contraire ! C’est la magie de ces cinq concerts : entendre à la fois l’individualisme de cinq géants et leur capacité à se tenir par la main pour rugir à l’unisson.

Côté répertoire, ce coffret est une sorte de nirvana davisien avec les plus grands thèmes (pas toujours de lui) qui ont fait le succès du trompettiste : ’Round Midnight, Bye Bye Blackbird, On Green Dolphin Street, Walkin’, All of You, Oleo, So What ou bien encore All Blues… Enfin, The Final Tour se conclut par une étonnante interview donnée par Coltrane au DJ radio suédois Carl-Erik Lindgren. « Vous sentez-vous en colère ? », lui demande celui-ci. « Non, répond Trane. J’expliquais récemment à un ami que la raison pour laquelle je jouais tant de sons – et c’est pour ça que ça peut ressembler à de la colère –, c’est que j’essaie de dire beaucoup de choses en même temps.
