Quatre ans séparent cet album de son prédécesseur The Wall qui plaça Pink Floyd au sommet de son succès. Un bien nommé Final Cut (a requiem for the post war dream), avec comme sous-titre "un requiem pour le rêve d'après-guerre", qui sera le dernier disque avec Roger Waters, auteur solitaire de ce concept-album qu’il interprète dans sa quasi-totalité — et le seul où n'apparaît pas le claviériste Richard Wright. Comme un premier opus solo ? Sans doute… Sa grandiloquence mise au service d’un antimilitarisme forcené (l’Angleterre et l’Argentine s’affrontent alors aux Malouines) n’est pas sans évoquer The Wall dont il retravaille d’ailleurs certaines compositions écartées à l’époque.
