Au début des années 2000, la réputation et la production de Depeche Mode étaient telles que best-of, compilations de singles et autres rétrospectives étaient devenues indispensables. Même s’il n’était pas la première compilation de l’enfant chéri de la synthpop, The Best of Volume 1 était le premier Best of de singles officiel du groupe. Embrassant la totalité des plus de vingt ans de carrière du groupe, la collection inclut d’anciens titres tels que "Just Can't Get Enough" et "See You", reprend des classiques de leur milieu de carrière comme "Personal Jesus" et "Enjoy the Silence", ainsi que des morceaux contemporains à leur retour à un mode de vie plus sobre, "Suffer Well" et "Precious". Cette présentation de ce grand groupe de New Wave est succincte, à l’instar de celles que l'on peut trouver ou pourra (inévitablement) trouver bientôt.
