L’American dream est un sujet inépuisable. On l’aborde frontalement, de biais, par-derrière, dessus ou dessous, c’est le carburant ultime de hordes de songwriters ; même lorsqu’ils ne sont pas nés là-bas, aux Amériques. Comme J.S. Ondara. Ce jeune Kenyan que son label qualifie de « trait d'union entre Tracy Chapman et Michael Kiwanuka » (facile mais pas faux) y va donc de son petit essai personnel. En 2013, Ondara jette l’ancre chez sa tante à Minneapolis. Les bars, les clubs et même la rue, celui qui n’avait jusqu’ici connu que son Nairobi natal promène ses chansons portées par une simple guitare acoustique dans l’espoir de devenir un Bob Dylan du troisième millénaire peut-être. Le Dylan de The Freewheelin’, son disque fétiche ; avec Nebraska de Springsteen… Mais se limiter à cloner de tels géants n’aurait pas grand intérêt. Et Tales of America évite cela. Déjà, J.S. Ondara a sa propre voix. Ce ton plaintif un brin androgyne qui marque sa différence. Côté instrumentarium, il ose quelques ajouts de goût avec l’aide notamment du grand Andrew Bird, de Griffin Goldsmith de Dawes ou encore de Joey Ryan du duo Milk Carton Kids. Dans une Amérique divisée et un monde secoué comme jamais, les chansons de J.S. Ondara sont plus que de simples pansements. Plutôt de puissants baumes qui pénètrent la peau et réchauffent le cœur.
