Nouvelle star de la country indé depuis son premier album en 2016, Margo Price n'est pas du genre à se reposer sur ses lauriers, à passer le reste de ses jours à répéter une formule qui marche. Après avoir repris le flambeau de la country féminine à l’ancienne, digne et créative, dans la lignée de Dolly Parton ou Emmylou Harris, elle est prise sur Strays d'une envie d'ailleurs. Géographique, d'abord. Loin des studios de Nashville ou Memphis (elle avait enregistré son premier album chez Sun), elle a commencé par écrire ce quatrième album lors d'un road trip en Caroline du Sud (en compagnie de champignons hallucinogènes, précise la bio).
Puis elle l'a enregistré en Californie avec le musicien Jonathan Wilson, dans son studio de Topanga Canyon, dans les collines de Los Angeles. Changement de décor, et de bande-son : Margo Price accélère le tempo, monte le volume, fait couiner les guitares et ressuscite les arpèges psyché-folk de la Californie des 60’s finissantes. Puis elle brise le coeur de ses fans avec quelques ballades aussi sobres que sombres en fin d’album. Toujours inspiré par les mélodies et les histoires de la country, mais plus énergique et panoramique, ce disque est évidemment illuminé par la voix juvénile de Margo Price, définitivement trop bonne chanteuse pour se cantonner à un seul style. L'exploit, c'est aussi qu'elle réussit à évoluer en restant fidèle à la même équipe de musiciens qu'à l'époque de son premier album – avec quand même quelques beaux guests comme Sharon Van Etten au chant ou Mike Campbell (du groupe de Tom Petty) à la guitare.
