En renouvelant la légende de son premier album, Nas veut se recentrer sur l’essentiel. Piqué à l’époque par le succès et l’arrogance de son concurrent Jay Z, il revient avec une formule plus violente et concise où chaque coup porté doit faire mouche. Dès l’ouverture de Stillmatic, Nas détruit Jay Z sur Ether comme pour lancer la révolte. Avec l’efficace Got Ur Self a Gun remodelant le générique de la série mafieuse Sopranos, il obtient son meilleur équilibre entre rap pur et crossover populaire depuis The Message. Il renoue ensuite avec son mentor Large Professor pour deux pièces maîtresses de sa discographie, Rewind et You’re da Man. Poussant l’introspection et l’honnêteté, Nasir y apparaît plus conquérant et vulnérable que jamais. Sur le bijou One Mic, il explique tout le sens de son écriture et la réalité de ses mots, comme un soliloque salvateur. On retrouve même AZ sur The Flyest pour un duo incomparable comme à l’époque de Life’s a Bitch. Offrant ainsi exactement ce qu’on attend de lui, Nas compose la bande-son parfaite de son courroux.
